About

This project involved the reconfiguration of a former golf clubhouse and extension to create a comfortable family home.  The brief from the client was to increase the bedroom accommodation and to make the house function better including when they entertain guests.

As a former golf clubhouse, there were 3 different areas to the original building, the former club room which is a light and airy space with wonderful far reaching views; the former machinery store which had been converted into a flat; and a more recent bedroom extension. Despite being a reasonable footprint overall, there were only two existing bedrooms in the property and the spaces were not laid out well, including a dining room space which was in the centre of the property with no external windows and the main circulation running through it, and coming straight in through the front door to this dining area, making this more of a hall. The existing downstairs toilet was also accessed directly off the family room space.

Several different schemes were prepared to provide the client with a range of options and the final agreed solution was refined and agreed. This included dividing the existing flat which was a single large bedroom into two bedrooms and reconfiguring the ensuite to this room to be a bathroom accessible from both these bedrooms.

In the space that was the former club room, several internal walls were removed and the existing bottom half of the staircase was turned through 90 degrees to improve the living room space. The kitchen was relocated to the dining space to become a new hub of the house, and the dining room was relocated into the former kitchen area. Circulation routes were adjusted with relocated doors to improve the flow of the property.

A new porch extension was also added to the front of the property which included an entrance lobby and shower room. Other minor changes were made to the living room, master bedroom ensuite and to other areas around the house to provide a hobby space and home office.

The result gives the additional bedroom space required, and works much better to provide a comfortable family home which is great for entertaining guests and still maintains the original appeal that drew the clients to the house originally, with the light airy spaces and far reaching views.
